All in all, this is a really fun opening and I would definitely recommend watching it even if you’re not planning on watching the show. Maybe I’ll make a separate post going into more detail about it. And not all of them are attracted to the main character! In fact, Aisha and Suzuka have no romantic interest in him at all (and honestly it feels like Melfina doesn’t either for 90% of the show). On a somewhat unrelated note, I really like how the main cast of the show is mostly women (or equally men and women, if you count Giliam) as opposed to mostly men, especially since it’s a show from the 90s. I also liked each character’s “picture” moment and felt they did a great job representing their personalities–Gene is a bit lazy and a “go-with-the-flow” kind of person Melfina is, well, Melfina Jim is more serious but can be funny and spends a lot of time with the ship’s computer, Giliam Suzuka is calm and mysterious (and it’s a funny nod to the running gag of her always having a cup of tea with her whenever she sits down somewhere) Aisha is the strongest woman in the show and is very physical. In the first few episodes it definitely made me want to learn more about Aisha and Suzuka, two side characters who don’t become important until a bit later on. It’s definitely more abstract as well, but it fits very well with the open-ended adventure vibes from the show. I’ve gone back and watched it on its own several times just because I like it so much. Truthfully, the opening is probably the best thing about the show, and it’s certainly my favorite part. It’s truly a show that I wish I had gotten more from–more character development, more exposition, more world-building, more episodes, more everything, really. I did like this anime, but I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it to anyone for several reasons. Oh, Outlaw Star: an anime that had such promise yet couldn’t deliver. Outlaw Star: “Through the Night” by Masahiko Arimatsu – 10/10 The opening is still good to watch though, and the song also slaps in this one. Lots of side characters become important in the second half of the show and it’s nice that they all get their due diligence, but it would be nice if they were shown actually doing something other than just looking at the camera. Also, there are a lot of “character flashes,” or moments when the screen is either cut into different panels that show several characters’ faces or shows a brief scene focusing on one or two characters. There are some elements of things that happen in the show, but it feels less “grounded” than the first one does, if that makes sense. There’s scenes of Maka and Soul in his scythe form falling into red water with purple roses on it Tsubaki, Liz, and Patty having a “protagonist staring dramatically/worriedly into the sunset” moment Soul holding an unconscious Maka over a symbol of the Kishin while screaming. It’s a lot like other anime openings where there’s more abstract imagery that doesn’t necessarily happen/relate to the show very closely.

Soul Eater OP 2: “Papermoon” by Tommy heavenly – 9/10ĭon’t get me wrong, the second opening is very good and I like it a lot, but it doesn’t hit quite as well as the first one for me.

Not to mention the full song absolutely slaps. Overall it has a nice balance of showing the audience what to expect and hinting with the very brief appearances of the Kishin’s symbol that there is more going on than meets the eye. Maka’s grigori soul makes a brief appearance. Foreshadowing Soul and Maka’s struggle with the black blood and the demon.

I love the little domestic scene they put in with all the characters in Maka and Soul’s apartment, which does happen several times throughout the show. The fly-through of Death City in the beginning is iconic, and so is Lord Death’s little dance in the Death Room. It truly captures the premise of the show by showing the weapons transforming and how the weapon and meister teams work together.

Although I love both of them, the first one will always be my favorite opening of any anime ever. Naturally I had to start off with my favorite anime ever, Soul Eater. Soul Eater OP 1: “Resonance” by T.M.Revolution – 1000/10 Second, for some of the longer anime on here, like Fairytail and Bleach, I will only be rating one or two of the openings in order to keep this list as short as possible. Hey all! My name is Moose, and just like the title says, I will be rating some of the openings for some of the anime I have seen! A few mandatory disclaimers, as always: these are all just my personal opinion, so please don’t take offense to any of my ratings or commentary.
